Description
The HSE recommends that there should be visual airflow indicators should be fitted to all Industrial Ventilation, or Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.
Inspection companies check that airflow indicators (or LEV Monitors) are fitted to all LEV extraction points as part of the compulsory Thorough Examination and Test (TExT).
Fitting airflow indicators greatly improves the safety of personnel using an LEV or Industrial Ventilation system.
The Chevron Airflow Indicator from Monitair is:

Whilst the static pressure in the duct stays adequate for safe air removal, the Chevron shows a continuously moving display.
If the negative static pressure within the duct drops by more than 20%, the Chevron recognises this as an unsafe condition. This triggers a series of flashes of the LED below the display, after which the display changes to an ‘X’ graphic, flashing on and off approximately twice per second. Thereafter, the red LED below the display flashes approximately every 5 seconds.
